Knowing your role is important

Every citizen has his or her own role and this is important for many reasons.

This is what 21 yearold, Selefuti Taofia of Mulifanua believes.

“So apart from other groups in our beautiful Samoa, young people for instance should understand that they are the future of the country,” Selefuti said.

He works at a company to provide his income.

“We all know that we young people, are often considered to represent the future or ‘malosi o le nu’u’ in our Samoan culture.

“So we have responsibilities to deal with, not only in our families or churches but the country as a whole.

“Adults believe that we can bring new ideas and energy to add to the pool of knowledge that currently exists.

“But what is really sad is that many young people don’t take that seriously.

“We have to bear in mind that we can help with new developments that can benefit our family and our people.

“So to me, we need to know who we are in the eyes of adults these days.”

He believes the best way for young people to nurture their lives “is in the villages”.

“I’ve lived here all my life so I cannot imagine myself staying anywhere else but here,” he said.

“As you can see, everything is always running smoothly, everyone lives in a beautiful natural environment, we also have curfews to follow like other villages.

“I mean there have been a lot of changes today but I think hanging onto our own culture is the best way to keep us together as one family.”

He said he isn’t just confined to helping his family or the village.

“I also help out the church when I’m needed with some work around our church compound.

“Whether it’s cleaning the environment or working together with the other men on other jobs, I give it all my best.

“I want to lead by example, not only as a member of our church but as a youth member of this country,” he said.
