We need to be alert Samoa

Dear Editor,

Doctors who pass themselves off as specialists is a phenomenon that happens in other countries as well as here in our paradise.

There was a case a few years ago in Australia (read about it on the internet) regarding an Indian doctor who falsified his qualifications and made himself out to be a surgeon. He was caught out when some of his patients developed post-op issues. The surgeon fled to the U.S.A when the authorities started investigating.

I guess we need to beef up our system of checks to ensure that we are confident about the qualifications and experience of those coming in to treat our patients. With digitisation, it is easy for some to download degrees from the internet and add non-existent experiences to embellish their CV’s.
