Tafitoala fights for survival amidst pollution and uncertainty
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express our community’s deep concerns regarding the recent sinking of the HMNZS Manawanui, a New Zealand vessel, off the coast of Samoa, and the potential environmental impact on our precious marine ecosystem.
Firstly, we are troubled by the fuels leaking from the ship’s three damaged points, which have caused a strong smell of fuel in the area. The impact of this pollution on the local environment is alarming, particularly since the Tafitoala Zone has now been declared a prohibited area due to safety concerns.
As a result of this incident, the income of local families and businesses that rely on fishing and marine activities has been severely affected. The disruption to our livelihoods is significant, and we hope that the responsible parties will consider providing support or compensation to those impacted.
Another pressing concern is the potential presence of the anti-fouling paint Tributyltin on the sunken ship and its potential impact on the surrounding reef. We urge the relevant authorities to investigate this matter and disclose their findings, as well as develop an action plan to mitigate any potential damage to the reef ecosystem.
Additionally, we call for an environmental follow- up program to monitor the long-term effects of this incident on our marine environment. Although the Marine Pollution Advisory Committee has confirmed that approximately 200,000 liters of diesel have leaked into the ocean, causing substantial damage to the coral reef, the full extent of the damage may not yet be known.
Lastly, while the New Zealand Defence Force claims that the vessel, which was carrying around 1,000 tons of oil at the time, is not leaking, conflicting reports from Samoan officials create confusion and concern among our community members. We urge both parties to collaborate closely or consider seeking assistance from specialists in the field from countries beyond New Zealand and provide accurate, transparent information about the situation.
In conclusion, we hope that our concerns will be addressed promptly and that all necessary measures will be taken to minimize the environmental damage caused by the sinking of the HMNZS Manawanui.
Sincerely,
Tafitoala Village Representative
