Merry Christmas - make it a meaningful one

Christians across the nation and around the world are celebrating the arrival of the baby Jesus. They are celebrating more than a birthday. They are marking the arrival of the “light of all people.”

Jesus was born in a barn and laid in a feeding trough. There could be no lies or deception in such a place. There was no covering up the stink of animals or the chill of the night in the Judean Mountains. There was only the plain truth.

Jesus would later state that he was “the Truth” and also that “the Truth will set you free.” The light shining in the darkness. The world needs the truth because the belief in Christ is also a belief many non-Christians share, that ultimately truth will prevail.

Truth often hurts, one reason so many reject it, even in Jesus’s time and even to his face. But the truth can also heal. Healing can usually not take place without it.

While we make our way to church on Christmas Day or say grace before tucking into the hearty Christmas lunch, let us not forget the spirit of Christmas. It is about giving, sharing, and spreading love. It is a time to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ and the other values he embodied – compassion, kindness, and forgiveness.

In our daily lives, we look beyond the dazzling lights and gifts and focus on the simple joys of spending time with loved ones, sharing meals, and expressing gratitude for the blessings in our lives. Spending time as a family also means cutting ties with the electronic devices that people have become addicted to.

We also remember those less fortunate and those suffering from health emergencies during this time. There are close to 30 children admitted to the national hospital who will not be able to celebrate like other children. By embracing the spirit of giving and sharing, we can make this Christmas truly meaningful for ourselves and others.

Beyond its dazzling lights and abundant feasts, Christmas encapsulates generosity, compassion, and selflessness. It’s a time for celebration and contemplation, focusing on the essence of giving.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to be consumed by materialism and lose sight of our true priorities. The heart of Christmas resides in the act of giving, extending beyond mere presents wrapped in ribbons. It’s about giving of ourselves – our time, empathy, and resources – to uplift others.

This year, reignite the holiday spirit by refocusing on giving back to our communities. Each small act of kindness contributes to a more compassionate society. This season isn’t solely about indulgence.

It is an opportunity to support those facing difficulties. Let’s acknowledge the challenges within our community and stand in solidarity with those who require our aid. Kindness can brighten someone’s day and renew hope amid challenging times.

To the nation's leaders, Samoa National Council of Churches Chairman Reverend Aisoli Iuli, Archbishop Mosese Tui,  Reverend Esera Auatama Esera of the Congregational Christian Church Samoa, the Methodist Church of Samoa President Reverend Faulalo Leti Paaga the Head of State Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa, religious leaders from all denominations, traditional leaders in our villages, the diplomatic corps, all parents, children, and everyone in Samoa, we wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Make Christmas a meaningful experience.
