The Journalist Association of Western Samoa (J.A.W.S.) has commissioned the Samoa Media Code of Practise booklet.

The pocket-size guidelines will be distributed to all the media outlets and the National University of Samoa for their use.

This is according to J.A.W.S. president, Rudy Bartley, who said copies will also be made available to the general public upon request. The Media Code of Practise for Samoan journalists was officially launched last year, and is now a pocket-size form.

Bartley said the concept behind having a pocket book is for the convenience of all journalist.

“This is so journalists can take it with them easily or have it on their desk as quick reference when writing their stories. It’s also for N.U.S. Media and Journalism school as a local teaching/reference material. Having this booklet will hopefully help media people be aware and provide some guidance in putting together stories which are factual, honest, unbiased and balanced,” she said.

“It also has an advertising section which will help commercial producers. All in the entire booklet is a guide and is intended to assist journalists in producing the stories etc. which meet professional and ethical standards. This is the only way the media can improve is having standards to work to and maintain.”

The J.A.W.S. executive made special mention of the Australian High Commission in Apia and the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (P.A.C.M.A.S.) for funding the publication of the booklet.

Bartley also acknowledged and thanked all those who worked from the start of J.A.W.S. to make this possible and added that they were also looking at translating the code into the Samoan language. For a copy of the code the public can email [email protected]
