First-ever Moana Pasifika 7s women rugby team did great

The first-ever Moana Pasifika 7s women team has had a  great weekend, despite their loss against Black Ferns, 31 - 0 at Hataitai Park, Wellington New Zealand.

According to a post they made on Facebook they are really humbled with the experience and having the chance to play against one of the toughest teams.

"We are very humbled and grateful for the opportunity that New Zealand Rugby presented us with and we can only grow and learn from our experience this weekend," it says.

The Moana Pasifika is a combined team made up of ladies from Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, and the Pacific Island countries. According to one of the team's Co-Coaches, Cynthia Ta'ala-Timaloa Lelepa and Rocky Khan, says that this opportunity enables the young talent to showcase their talents and represent their countries.


"It's an exciting initiative to be a part of, an opportunity to enable our young talent to foot it with the best in the world by representing their families, communities, and culture in a Moana Pasifika jersey." Rocky Khan said.

"You may see in the near future one of these girls pull on a Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and or Cook Island jersey, being part of this team opens up some of those doors to possibly to do so, who knows." Cynthia Ta’ala - Timaloa added.

The squad is Grace Kukutai (Malie-Samoa, Tainui, Nga Puhi-Auckland), Mele Hufunga (Lapaha-Tonga, Auckland), Dajian Brown (Safa'atoa Lefaga, Sataoa -Samoa, Auckland), Masuisuimatamalii Pauaraisa (Foailalo, Savaii- Samoa, Canterbury), Faasua Makisi (Fo'ui & Leimatu'a Tonga, Falealupo & Vaimoso- Samoa, Wellington), Luisa Togotogorua (Vatulele, Bouwaqa- Fiji, Auckland), Karla-Wright Aleki (Saleufi, Vaiusu - Samoa, Canterbury), Tysha Ikenasio (Manono-Samoa, Auckland), Katelyn Vaha'akolo (Nukualofa-Tonga, Ngati Watua, Nga Puhi, Tainui, Counties Manukau), Makayla Eli (Tulaele, Lalomanu, Matautu-Uta- Samoa, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Counties Manukau), Shannon Muru (Ma'ufanga-Tonga, Te Rarawa, Auckland), Kiana Wereta (Nga Rauru, Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Waitaha, Nga Puhi, Auckland), and Tafito Lafaele (Maagiagi, Tufulele - Samoa, Auckland).

The captain of the Moana Pasifika team acknowledges their supporters and New Zealand rugby for hosting a successful event, the Moana Pasifika gifted one of their jerseys to the Black Ferns during their farewell.

"Just want to say thank you to all the teams, to NZ rugby for holding this tournament especially a shout-out to our Moana Pasifika girls, its been a privilege," she said.

"On behalf of our girls, we just want to present you with our jersey and give you all the luck and the heart that we've taken out for you guys to take to the Olympics," she added.
