Multitasking wonders of mothers

A father’s role is not only limited to a man.

Mothers can do it too.

Meet Taumaia Fruean from Faleula-Uta who says that she can also carry out a father’s responsibility.

The 40-year-old mother of three was spotted by the Village Voice team yesterday while she was on her way to the shop.

“The role of women in the family is very important,” she said.

“Because we all know that we’re the ones who take care of the whole family when everyone is gone to work.

“The cleaning of the house, the laundry every day, the food on the table, I mean everything.”

Taumaia says she also works on her family’s plantation.

“I help my husband everyday especially when he’s not feeling well,” she said.

“I mean when fathers are tired, then we are the ones who always make it through every day.

“That’s why mothers of Samoa are different from mothers in other countries.”

Taumaia said one her most precious times of being a mother is when she shares about life with her children.

“I always encourage my children about many things in life that they should do.

“I give them a lot of advice whenever I can because I think this is why many of our mothers are losing their children at such a young age.

“I think this is one of the reasons there are so many problems happening to our children especially girls.

“If we teach them to sleep all day, then they’ll take the same track in the future.

“As a mother, we need to work both in and out of our family.”

Taumaia says she also talks and advises her husband on how to help their family.

“We are known as ‘pae ma auli’, and that’s exactly what we’re made to be in this world.

“Fathers can do whatever they want, but a woman with courage is always there to look after the children and the family from day to day.
