Parties join forces ahead of General Election

The Samoa National Democratic Party (S.N.D.P), Tumua ma Puleono and the Fa'atuatua ile Atua Samoa ua Tasi [F.A.S.T.] party have joined forces ahead of next year's General Election.

F.A.S.T. leader and former Cabinet Minister, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, was accompanied by S.N.D.P. leader and former Member of Parliament, Valasi Tafito, and Tumua ma Puleono Secretary and spokesman, Malaeolevavau John Peterson, during a press conference on Wednesday to announce the deal.

The party’s leaders and representatives signed an agreement at the F.A.S.T. headquarters in Vaitele to give effect to their political partnership.

“This agreement has it that candidates from S.N.D.P. and Tumua ma Pule will run under the flag of the F.A.S.T. with the understanding we are one,” said Laauli.

He said the manifest for each party remains unchanged, however, their candidates will contest under the F.A.S.T. banner during the 2021 General Election.

Valasi added that they have agreed there will be one F.A.S.T. candidate running from each constituency.

“We will decide on which candidate that will run from the constituencies, but there will only be one, unlike the H.R.P.P. they have several candidates running from one constituency. We don’t want that, hence, uniting under the flag of the F.A.S.T. because we want to see a change in government.”

The move by the S.N.D.P. to join forces with the F.A.S.T. is to assure the motto unity will make the party strong, Valasi further reiterated.

He also called on other political parties to follow suit if they want to see a change in Government.

La'auli added that in selecting a F.A.S.T. candidate for the constituency, the candidates’ qualifications will be considered and the party will make a unified decision on a candidate who will run for each respective constituency.

Speaking during the press conference, Malaeolevavau said their main objective is to remove the H.R.P.P. Government which has been in power for decades.

“Uniting under the F.A.S.T. is a good move because we want to see change. We share the same goal and we will work together in going forward. Today we want to declare that we will be running under the F.A.S.T.,” he added.
