Member of Parliament for Urban West, Faumuina Wayne Fong, has been sacked from the ruling Human Rights Protection Party (H.R.P.P.).

The decision was confirmed yesterday by Prime Minister and leader of H.R.P.P., Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi. He said the decision was made during a caucus meeting last Friday and that the party does not need members who betray the Government.

"We don’t need members who don’t come in to support the Government, the H.R.P.P," said Tuilaepa. “You all know the reason [why he is sacked], he’s not a member of the party and that is reflected from his public statements. 

“We don’t need that kind of member and his statements show that he is a member that only came in for what benefits him but not to support the Government…” 

Contacted for a comment, Faumuina said he was in a meeting and would call after. The call was not returned before press time. 

Faumuina, Olo Fiti Vaai and La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao were recently referred to as a “party of three” by the Prime Minister.  The trio incurred Tuilaepa’s wrath for publicly criticising Government developments and asking questions critical of public works. 

Faumuina follows Gagaifomauga no3 M.P. La’aulialemalietoa who was also recently kicked out by the H.R.P.P. making him an independent M.P. 

The M.P. was also the subject of orders from the Prime Minister in May asking for his resignation from the H.R.P.P. 

It was reported that Tuilaepa made the demand over Faumuina’s views on the three bills before parliament which will make the Land and Titles Court independent. 

Faumuina had maintained that he remains a member of the party. At the time, the M.P. for Urban West said he is still open to express his opinion and answer back to critics whenever he wants.

He said the order from the leader of H.R.P.P. to resign from the party followed a village council meeting of Gagaifo Lefaga on the Mother’s Day public holiday.

“Opinions and views that were expressed in the meeting was for the purpose of village discussions and to inform the village of the legislations,” the M.P. said. 

“My opinion was also sought on the legislations and I made very clear there are amendments in the law I don’t agree with.

 “The truth is that village council and district meetings should not be intervened by the Prime Minister or the Government. 

“The villages have their rights to express views on their position to be presented before the Parliamentary Committee on the bills.”

Faumuina added if the Prime Minister does not agree with their views, “I apologise but not all views are the same.”
