Change at the helm of Fa’asaleleaga Rugby

Change is taking place at the leadership of Savai’i’s most successful rugby union in recent years.

The Manager of the S.R.U’s High Performance Unit, Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun has stepped away from the Presidency role so he could concentrate on his post.

That has opened the door to another son of Salelologa, Su'a Hesed Heremia, to take over as President of the Faasaleleaga Rugby Union.

Speaking to Observer Sports, Seumanu said the Union is in good hands.

“I have faith in Sua because I have worked with him for so many years and I am sure that he will be able to lift Savai’i rugby to another level," he said.

Seumanu said he would miss his time as President. Among the highlights of his tenure has been the rise of Salelologa Sevens team as well as their Super 9 performance last year.

"There is so much potential in the boys from Savai’i,” he said.

Seumanu’s vision is to try and give more opportunities to Savai’i players to be exposed to high level competitions.

"Rugby back then in Savaii was not really known and look at it now?” he reminisced.

“There were teams from Savaii who have joined competitions here in Upolu and have won. There are also players that have made it far which all started from those union competitions.”

With Su'a as the new President, Seumanu believes there are better things to come.

"Sua is a very committed man, and that is why I am confident that he will carry on the legacy of building the players from the big island and to bring more out of them.

“There are good and best players from Savai’i, they just need to be mentored well and they also need to be pushed to do their best.”

The Fa’asaleleaga Union will start their tournament on Saturday 11 July 2020 at Sapapali’i.
