A man alleged to have attacked and injured two people, when he lashed out with a machete at the Savalalo Fish Market last month, appeared in Court on Tuesday.

The defendant, Tagaloa Maugaloto Palu, appeared for criminal mention before Supreme Court Justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke.

His case, like 70 others, had been scheduled for Monday but were held over a day due to technical issues in Justice Leiataualesa’s court.

The defendant is facing numerous charges: one count of attempted murder, one count of being armed with a dangerous weapon (a machete) and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm.

He made his court appearance via video link.

Tagaloa is accused of attacking two people with a machete and causing them serious injury when he is alleged to have perpetrated the attack at the fish market at Savalalo.

It also alleged he tried to kill one of the victims.

The incident was captured on video and was uploaded to social media by a witness, where it became widely shared.

Defence lawyer, Leota Tima Leavai, is representing Tagaloa.

But because Leota was not present at Tagaloa’s first mention, Justice Leiataualesa adjourned the matter to next week to allow Leota to appear.

The defendant is being held in custody at Tanumalala Prison.
