The Office of the Electoral Commissioner will be conducting a door to door registration, prompted by the increasing need for voter registration.

Responding to questions from the Samoa Observer, Electoral Commissioner, Faimalomatumua Mathew Lemisio, said the target group is ages 21 to 35-year-olds.

According to Faimalomatumua, a major portion of this number are yet to register for the 2021 General Elections. 

The amount of voters from this age group alone is about 15,000.

"To keep in line with social distancing and making it more convenient for our people, we have decided to go out to the community for a door to door voter registration," he said.

"We urge them to please come down to our Office and register…and be heard in the polling booth….elections is the only opportunity where we get to have a say in electing our leaders for the next five years. So get on board and be part of the process."

The last day of registration is only four months away.

The Electoral Office is said to be collaborating with the village representatives to ensure the identifying of eligible voters yet to register in villages.

"Our team is working on the database from the 2016 Census to abstract the names of eligible voters who have yet to be registered in each village," Faimalo said.

"We’ll then work with one of our key stakeholders, the Sui o Nu’u and Sui Tama’ita’i and also the Sui o le Malo to help identify exactly where these voters before we roll out to the community."

Should authorities find eligible voters who had not registered after October 9 this year they will be liable to a maximum fine of $4,000 tala.

Meanwhile, the nomination period for candidates running in the 2021 General Elections opens on October 12, 2020 and closes at 12pm on October 23, 2020.
