The heavy rainfall and gusty winds that Samoa has been feeling in recent days are the result of a "live convergence zone" close to the country and forecasters say they are not likely to ease today.

“A heavy rain advisory is now effective for all islands and it is expected to persist for another day or two,” said the Samoa Meteorological Service’s scientific officer, Silipa Mulitalo, in an interview with the Samoa Observer.

“Because of high waves and swells so we are issuing an advisory on mariners, fishermen and small crafts as well.”

Mr. Silipa Mulitalo said Samoa can expect scattered showers widespread today.

“Thunderstorms are likely with strong winds gusts at times particularly during rain,” he added.

Flooding and landslides are also possible for the country’s vulnerable areas, if the severe weather conditions continue, according to Mr. Mulitalo.

And while a heavy rain advisory is in place for all the islands, there is no forecast of extreme weather conditions such as cyclones that could impact Samoa.

But the forecasts for the region does not look good with the reporting of a tropical disturbance located further west to the northwest of Fiji.

It is expected to move towards Fiji islands in the next few days with some developments. 

The Fiji Meteorology Service has indicated moderate potential for the system to develop into a Tropical Cyclone within the next day or two.

And while Samoa remains safe from cyclones, Mr. Mulitalo said the Samoa Meteorology Office will continue to monitor the weather and keep Samoa informed.
