Nevaeh To'a Samoa's first baby for new decade

Nevaeh To'a, born at 12:30am on the first day of 2020, is Samoa's first baby this year.

The baby girl weighing 3580grams (7lbs 87oz) was delivered by Tiara Tu'ulua and the team at the Moto'otua National Hospital on Wednesday morning.

"Girls rule the world," smiled Registered Midwife, Tiara.

The mother of the baby, Angela To'a from Falefa and Sa'anapu said this is her third baby. All three are girls.

"Her name is Heaven spelled backwards," she said.

"This one was hard, I almost gave up but thank God we have been successfully been separated."

RM Tiara said she is sure Nevaeh is the first baby for Samoa as no news about any other babies being delivered in Savai'i has emerged.

"They usually upload and update us whenever there is a new born delivered but so far, none whatsoever," she told Samoa Observer at 1:45am.

While Samoa Observer was in hospital for the first baby of 2020, four other mothers were already in labour and close to giving birth.

RM Tiara said this is not her first time delivering a first baby for the year. She has been delivering first babies for years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2020.

Even more special because the mother of the first baby of 2020 is her relative.

"To me, it's a blessing being a trans[woman] to be working here and working with all the midwives and doctors here," he said.

"But it's a blessing to be always be the one working through festive season and forget about all the parties and services needed to deliver to Samoa.

"And delivering first baby for this year is blessing for all of us here, and to know that it's my cousin's baby, is a bonus for me."

Despite missing out on the festive season with his children and family at home, RM Tiara said it's worth it knowing it's because he is providing a life saving service alongside other midwifes and doctors in the Maternity ward.
