43-year-old latest measles fatality, death toll hits 80 on Christmas

The measles death toll has reached 80, with the latest fatality a 43-year-old who died within the last 24 hours.

This was confirmed by the National Emergency Operation Centre in its latest update, where 23 new cases of measles were also confirmed for the past day.

The report says three pregnant women were admitted to the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital (T.T.M.H.) were treated and discharged in the last 24 hours.  

The Ministry of Health has confirmed a total of 5,603 measles cases have been reported to the Disease Surveillance Team, since the outbreak started. 

There are currently 55 measles cases who are in-patients at all health facilities. 

Of this, 49 are at the T.T.M.H., three at the Leulumoega Rural District Hospital, one at Lalomanu District Hospital and two at the Malietoa Tanumafili II Hospital (MTIIH). Admissions include 8 critically ill children and one adult in ICU/HDU.  

The total number of measles cases admitted to all hospitals recorded for the outbreak to date is 1,818.  Of that, 1,683 (93%) patients have been discharged. 

The Government report also highlighted that approximately 95% of all eligible people in Samoa have been vaccinated against measles as of December 24, 2019.

 All 3 pregnant women who were admitted in TTMH have been treated and discharged in the last 24 hours.

To date, 80 measles related deaths have been recorded, with 1 fatality (43 year old) in the last 24 hours.

VACCINATION UPDATE:

As of December 24, 2019, approximately 95% of all eligible people in Samoa have been vaccinated against measles.

National Emergency Operations Centre (N.E.O.C.) continues to be the focal point providing collaboration and operational coordination amongst all stakeholders, with advice and technical guidance from MOH for the duration of the Emergency Period.
