Three accidents in one day
As Samoa enters the festive season, a total of three car accidents resulting in serious injuries to vehicle occupants took place at different locations on Saturday: Leulumoega, Falelatai, and Vaigaga.
The first car crash occurred at Vaigaga in the morning involving a white mini-van and white sedan.
The police and ambulance were immediately called in by bystanders.
Later in the afternoon a white Toyota land cruiser smashed into the right side of a white mini-van.
The incident resulted in causing bodily injuries to the driver of the mini-van.
The last car crash occurred at Leulumoega near its district hospital.
A white pickup smashed head on to a black Nissan X-trail and causing drivers to be taken to the hospital.
Police and ambulance were present at the scene of the incident.
Attempts by Samoa Observer on Sunday to contact Police for a comment on the Leulumoega and Falelatai accidents were unsuccessful.
The Police have recorded a total of 873 incidents over the 2018 Christmas and New Year 2019 period which include one murder and two manslaughter cases.
There was a big spike in incidences of driving under the influence of alcohol compared to last year with the Police recording 46 arrests, which represented an increase of 119 per cent compared to last year.
There was also an increase in careless driving cases with the Police recording 29 arrests which was an increase of 61 per cent.
For the offence of intentional damage, the Police recorded 15 incidents which is a 200 per cent increase compared to last year.
The number of arrests for this year amounted to 141 for traffic and criminal incidents, which is an increase of 34 per cent from the previous year.
