Identity of Pastor facing sex charges revealed

The identity of a pastor in the Methodist Church, who is facing sex charges in relation to a young girl under 16 years of age, can now be revealed.

He is Reverend Tugia Tuliau who pastored the Methodist Church at Satalo Falealili. He has since been defrocked by the church.

Rev. Tuliau was given name suppression last week while prosecution sought to confirm if the alleged victim in the matter was a relative of the defendant.

In the Supreme Court on Monday, Assistant Attorney General, Magele Leone Su’a, said the defendant has no family relationship with the young girl. She asked if the interim suppression order on the defendant could be lifted.

Justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke granted the request and lifted the interim name suppression for the 51-year-old defendant.

Tuliau is facing eight charges that consist of rape, three counts of sexual conduct with a young person under 16 and three counts of sexual conduct with a family member.

A person is liable to imprisonment term of not exceeding 14 years for sexual connection with a dependent family member under the age of 21 years.

The defendant was represented by lawyer, Leiataualesa Komisi Koria.

He asked for an adjournment without plea to allow him to go through the charges with his client.

In terms of a bail application for Tuliau, prosecution did not oppose the request but had asked for strict conditions of his release.

Those conditions include Tuliau being prohibited from setting foot on Satalo Falealili where the alleged incident occurred, ordered not to contact the young complainant and witnesses in the matter.

The defence counsel told the Court that the defendant can reside with his family at Vaimoso upon being released on bail.

Justice Leitaualesa adjourned the matter without plea to next week.
