Manu Sevens star seeks discharge without conviction

Manu Samoa Sevens player, Siaosi Asofolau, is seeking the Court’s indulgence to have his criminal case discharged without a conviction.

The application was made by his lawyer, Afamasaga Michael So’onalole before District Court Judge, Alalatoa Rosella Papali’i.

The defendant pleaded guilty last week to charges of assault, being armed with a dangerous weapon and throwing objects.

The Court heard that prosecution requires time to respond accordingly.

The Police summary of facts was read in Court and was accepted by the defendant.

The victim is a 25-year-old male of Maninoa Siumu and is a Security Guard at the Oceans Club.

“On Monday 12, 2019 around 3:30 pm the defendant was in a drinking session with his friends at the Ocean Club."

The victim was on duty at the club and as he was standing by the gate the defendant walked up to him and strangled him.

“As a result of the victim was suffocating.”

The Police report stated that bystanders intervened and pulled the defendant away from the victim.

Not long after the defendant was calmed down, the victim’s brother arrived with his father and found out what occurred. The brother then approached the defendant and they argued. Bystanders managed to stop the argument and the defendant “armed himself with an empty whiskey bottle and threw it towards the victim and his brother.”

Police arrived and the defendant was taken into custody, stated the Police report.

Judge Alalatoa has ordered the defendant undergo alcohol screening, to assess if he should be attending therapeutic and rehabilitative alcohol programme.

The matter has been rescheduled to next week Tuesday.
