16-year-old boy facing murder charges, husband in custody over wife's death
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder, the second homicide charge laid by the Police in a week.
The Samoa Observer has been told that the 16-year-old suspect is allegedly related to the victim in the incident, a 24-year-old male.
According to a media release by the Police, the deceased sustained injuries inflicted as a result of a fight between the pair that occurred two weeks ago, July 25.
When asked about reports that a shovel had been wielded in the dispute, the Acting Police Commissioner Papali'i Monalisa Keti confirmed investigations by the force's Criminal Investigation Division were ongoing.
"The deceased was taken and admitted at the Motootua hospital on the same day and died on Monday 5 August 2019," the Police said.
The Police criminal investigation division was notified on Monday, and the 16-year-old was later arrested and charged.
The defendant is currently being held in custody until August 19 when he will appear in Court for mention.
In a separate incident, a man has been charged with the alleged murder of his 53-year-old wife, who died on Monday, July 29.
"A 53-year-old female of Lalomanu was admitted at the Lalomanu District Hospital on the 24th July 2019," Police said.
"She was a victim of a domestic violence case.
"She was later transferred to Motootua Hospital and passed away on Monday 29 July 2019 as a result of her injuries."
The husband was initially charged with causing injury, with the additional murder charge filed after his wife died.
The Acting Police Commissioner, Papali'i Monalisa Tiai, confirmed that the defendant is being remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Court on August 12 for mention.
