Samoa’s first online taxi service introduced

Taxi customers in Samoa can sit in the comfort of their own home and make an online booking for a taxi, in what is a first for the country and probably the Pacific Islands.

The online taxi service, SefeTravel, was recently launched recent by Owner, Gary Carruthers, who did a lot of work behind-the-scenes to set up the online system.

He said the online service begins with downloading an application (app) called SefeTravel Passenger on Play Store, which is applicable to both Android and Apple smartphones and no credit or debit card details are required.

For security purposes, once a passenger has made a booking, the driver’s name and other details will be sent to their phones via text message and customers will have the chance to choose from a sedan, van or even pick a woman-driver option.

Mr. Carruthers said another advantage is that if passengers leave behind their belongings they can easily find the driver using the details.

“This eliminates other safety concerns which might occur while travelling with a non-SefeTravel registered taxi, plus you can track on your phone through Google map the location of your taxi.

“Our services will save you the hassle of chasing a taxi during a hot or rainy day and even late at night. The prices for taxi fares will not change either that is between the driver and passenger.

“And because it is an app the services can be rated by passengers because of strict standards for performance and cleanliness is a must for all our taxis,” he added.

Mr. Carruthers told the Samoa Observer that there are also roaming options for overseas visitors travelling to Samoa.

“After downloading our Passenger App you can sign in and where we ask for your mobile number you can click on the flag of your country and enter your mobile number (no country code required) or credit/debit card details needed.”

There are also employment opportunities for all taxi owners and drivers that want to register during this month, according to Mr. Carruthers.

“If you own a taxi business, we will help your business be more active and build on your customer base and as passengers feel more comfortable, your business will also grow.

“Taxi drivers who want to register for free until June 30th will have the chance to use SefeTravel and get used to how our driver app works and there is no limit to the number of taxis who want to register. Because we just started our main headquarters is at my home in Vailima."
