Better roads needed for our village
Some people may be wondering how improved roads can help the development of a country.
Or how can they benefit people’s lives?
Sua Talataina of Saoluafata will tell you all about it.
“I believe that roads are some of the things that contribute to the development of any country,” he says to the Village Voice.
“So if I’m asking for help in fixing our roads, it’s not just for our own good, it’s for the betterment of the whole country.”
The 40 year old said he grew up in his village understanding that this is one of the things that his village needs; better roads.
“We have been requesting for the government’s help a few times on this matter. This is not something that we can do it on our own, no. It costs a lot of money.
“Growing up with wrecked roads, it has caused a lot of difficulties. It’s a problem for us because we walk on these roads and also our means of transportation is not working out well because of that.
“A lot of people have plantations here in this area, myself included, so most of the time, we need to come to check up on them but it’s a difficult thing to do if we struggle to look for rides to come back here.
“Your car can be new but keep in mind that it will never last once you reach these roads.
“That’s why most drivers are scared to take this route.
“I feel sorry for those that are staying at Manunu because they always have a hard time finding transportation from the village to the inner area and from the inner area back to the village.
“There are no buses. The only bus that comes here is the school bus and it only comes three times a day to pick up the school kids.
“I know how it feels like for everyone staying in this area and it’s not something you want to live with forever We need better roads so we can get easy access to transportation.
This is such a long distance and as we have seen before, a lot of the villagers when they come back from town, they hitchhike so they can come back to their homes.
“What’s the point of having cars anyway if no one wants to drive through because of the condition of the roads?
“We are asking the government for their help. This would make things easier for us.”
