The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.) recently engaged students of the National University of Samoa in a forum targeting sustainable development process.

Following an invitation from the university for the Ministry’s participation in the fourth Samoa conference earlier this month, the Water and Sanitation sector used the opportunity to support one of the key events – the student rally.

The rally was the first student forum for the university - a platform that sought to expose and engage students in sustainable development processes, a statement said.

The theme “Fostering Sustainable Development: Can Education Deliver?” set the students focus on the transformative contributions that education and academic institutions have to make in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, said the statement.

According to the statement, as part of the rally, break-out sessions were also conducted on many topics including “Water and Sanitation: Ensuring the maximal engagement of young people” which was facilitated by Ms. Ueselani, together with the selected panelists, Asuao Malaki Iakopo, A.C.E.O. Water Resources Division (M.N.R.E.), Emarosa Romeo (Hydro Division – M.N.RE..) and Fanueli Tuafale (Policy & Regulatory Division).

Students were able to ask questions and interact with the panelists during this break-out sessions.  The aim of these sessions was to provide and equip students with the practical knowledge as to how universities can take the lead in education at every level, in delivering ways that foster sustainable development through leadership, innovation and collaboration.

The Water and Sanitation Sector supported the event by funding students’ packages, which included stationaries as well as catering for the event.
