Success and failure all in the mind
Being successful is a decision you make in your mind and then you have to find the energy to achieve it.
Eteuati Motusaga from Lano Savai’i and Si’usega says this is why mental toughness is so important because whatever we think we are is what we will eventually become.
The Village Voice team met him yesterday while on his way to attend his classes at the National University of Samoa yesterday.
Eteuati is a first year Bachelor of Arts student.
The 21-year-old stays with his uncle, who also supports him with his study costs.
“My family at Savai’i depend mostly on the plantation for food and money, no one works,” he said.
“After my secondary school year at Don Bosco in Savai’i, my uncle told my parents that I need to come and stay with him so that I could enrol at N.U.S. because I had attained a good academic result.”
“Honestly, I didn’t want to come because I wanted to stay home and help my parents out.”
“You know life in Savai’i, it’s not that easy and when I think about how my family struggles every day, especially my parents in collecting coconuts to sell for our family to survive from day to day, I nearly gave up the offer from my uncle to come here to continue my education.”
“My parents also pushed me to come with a promise that they’ll help out any time.”
“So I’m at the end of my first year and I thank God for taking the wheel.”
Eteuati said money was his biggest challenge.
“I see it every day, I don’t want to go into details about it, but I really need financial assistance to help my uncle and my parents with my study costs.”
“Now, I have two more years for my Bachelor of Arts program, I mean it’s a long way and as I’ve mentioned earlier, it’s all about money.”
He believes challenges keep him going all the time.
“I know my parents especially my uncle are struggling to put me in school, and because they love me they don’t want to talk about it but work on it for me to be successful.”
“It keeps me going all the time, gives me hope and challenges me to do better in school, I have a family, parents, a loving uncle who are waiting for me to be successful.”
“I have to do better to help my family and lift them to another level of life from where we used to be ever since I was young.”
