Senior Police officer suspended

A senior member of the Police force has been suspended after a traffic accident.

“A senior police officer or commissioned officer has been suspended from duty, pending traffic charges filed against him in court,” said a statement issued by the Police yesterday.

“The officer was involved in a traffic accident and he was processed through the breathalyzer test as per requirements of the law.

“His alcohol level exceeded the 40microgram limitation described in the law and he was charged accordingly.

“The officer was off duty at the time of the accident,” says the press statement.

Police have a zero tolerance policy on vehicle accidents involving alcohol and will continue to hold its officers accountable for their actions on and off duty.

“Samoa Police Service is committed to gaining the trust of the public.”

They thanked the public for their continuous support.

“Stay safe on our roads and watch out for pedestrians especially young children.”

Earlier this month, a probationary police officer was terminated from the service after he was charged because of an unmarked police vehicle crash over the white Sunday long weekend.

“The officer was charged after undertaking the breathalyzer procedures whereby his alcohol result exceeded the limit prescribed in the law.

“The officer has been remanded at liberty and is now awaiting court proceedings to answer to the charges filed against him.

“S.P.S. has a zero-tolerance policy on officer’s misuse of government assets especially whilst under the influence of alcohol.

“We stay committed in gaining the trust of the public by ensuring that our officers are held accountable for the actions that they take on and off duty.

“S.P.S. is setting an example in reiterating that no one is above the law,” says the press statement.
