The Samoa Badminton Federation held an outreach programme at Savaia-Lefaga last weekend.

According to Tomasi Peni, a member of the Federation, the outreach programme is one of their numerous activities held throughout the year to take development programmes to the local community.

Mr. Peni said the main aim of the development programmes is to ensure the development of the sport in the grassroots level, as well as promoting healthy living.

“The aim is ensuring the development of the badminton sport in Samoa is well received and shared with young ones.”

“The programme also promotes healthy living as one of the development goal under Strategic Development Plan for Samoa 2016-2020.”

Mr. Peni said the experience and the atmosphere during the programme were superb, with about 60 kids and parents showing support for the sport.

“The interest from the young ones as well as the support of the parents was overwhelming.”

Mr. Peni said the church representative relayed their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the team and requested more programmes as such relating to badminton.

She also added their aim is for these young ones to represent Samoa in the future.

With Pacific Games 2019 coming up, the Samoa Badminton Federation is on a mission.

Mr. Peni emphasized there are still challenges, but they are looking to overcome it as they get their preparations underway.

“Samoa Badminton Federation has started their trainings and preparation, and at the same time sharing the skills and knowledge to the young ones through their outreach programmes.”

“The challenges that the Federation have is finding the proper venue for their training because currently they are squeezing their weekly training schedule at Apia Park gym with the Basketball Association and Judo Federation.”

“Sometime the gym is booked out by basketball mainly on Fridays and Saturdays.”

“The number of the Samoa Badminton Federation is growing with new members joining in as well as old players who are now rejoining. The focus of the Federation is winning more gold medals for Samoa in the upcoming Pacific Games.”
