Young man devoted to his family’s well being
It is a typical story for many young people in Samoa.
They don’t plan to have a family.
Some of them just get into it and after a few years of trying really hard to develop and overcome, they realise that they did not give the idea of enough thought.
Fereti Maiava is a little different.
The 21-year-old is from the villages of Magiagi and Vailoa, Faleata, wants to plan his future and that of his young family properly.
“At this stage my family is very important to me because we are just developing, me, my wife and my six-month old daughter,” he told the Village Voice.
“I am looking for a job but in the meantime we have a plantation to earn our food and money.”
Fereti understands the cost of living is too high.
But he knows there is nothing he can do to change it.
“Every family faces the same issue with the high cost of living. All we can do is to work hard, we cannot give up.”
Family and church obligations are a big problem.
“When it comes to family faalavelave, church and villages donation it cost us lots of money. But it’s a must to do it.”
He believes changes and challenges are part of life but we must try our best to overcome them.
At the moment, Fereti’s focus is developing his young family.
“I work to provide for my family,” he said.
“As a young father, I know very well what I should be working harder to help my family.
“Hopefully one day I’ll get a job so that I can give my family the best life.”
