P.M. to pay tribute to Samoan icon

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi will pay tribute to businessman, hotelier and Good Samaritan, La’auli Alan Grey, during his final service today.

To be held at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral at Mulivai, the service is scheduled to begin at 10am.

The Head of State, His Highness Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, is expected to attend, among a host of Government, business and rugby officials.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa, who is also the Chairman of the Samoa Rugby Union, is one of two eulogies scheduled at the service. 

The family’s eulogy will be delivered by La’auli’s son, Lupesina Fred Grey.

La'auli passed away peacefully at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital last Saturday morning. He was 82.

The son of the famous Aggie Grey played an instrumental role in developing the Aggie Grey’s brand to reach where it is today.

The company has grown to include the Sheraton Samoa hotels in Samoa and multiple properties in Tahiti French Polynesia.

He was very passionate about rugby in Samoa and was instrumental in the development of the game earning himself the nickname “Mr. Rugby” as well as the “Father of Rugby.”

 He coached the Vaiala rugby side during their winning streak from 1971 - 1978 and is fondly remembered by his team as being a very humble and generous man and a great friend.

La’auli is survived by his wife Marina and children Aggie, Tanya, Lupesina Fred, grandchildren and one great grandchild.

His final resting place will be at his Afiamalu homestead.
