Sexual crimes continue to rise

With the rising number of reports of children being sexually abused, the Ministry of Police has reiterated this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

Those accused will be arrested and held in custody until they make an appearance in court, the Police say.

Last week, according to the Police media officer, Su’a Lemamea Tiumalu, there were two similar incidents reported.

The two incidents involved two teenage girls who are 14 years of age.

The first incident was reported to the Afega Police Post on  7th August 2016, where a 14 year old victim was sexually abused by a 21-year-old male.

The accused has been charged with sexual connection with a young person and the offence carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment.

Another incident was reported to the Faleolo Police Post, also involving a 14 year-old victim.

The 25 year old male accused is also charged with one count of sexual connection with a young person and is in police custody.

Both men will appear for mention in the Supreme Court on the 22nd August 2016.
