Leulumoega Fou College dominated the recent 2019 Zone D Regional Schools Sevens tournament.

Safata College came second with Aana No.1 College coming third place, followed by the Paul VI College in fourth place.

The Zone D teams comprised: Aana No.1 College, Aana No.2 College, Lefaga College, Leulumoega Fou College, Nuuausala College, Paul VI College, Safata College, Sagaga College, and Wesley College.

The president of Zone D, Reverend Fuatimu Posese, spoke of the importance of rugby for students.

“The tournament was established with the goal of developing skills of rugby within the young generation and also assisting those who have the talent in sports.

“It is evident with previous games that were played that our local players have the passion and potential to be professional players in the future.

“But there is still room for improvement on other areas like encouraging females to participate in games – I believe that we are still slow in developing women players in Samoa,” he said in an interview.

He also added that girls should have the same opportunities like boys to address and ensure gender equality in sports.

“It is disappointing to see that there are divisions in our tournament where there are no teams for girls. We did not encounter any difficulty coordinating this tournament because our expenses have been covered by the grant given by the Government.”
