Your health is in your hands

Help yourself first before you help others.

That is the opinion of Muliaga Vaifoa Lealaitafea from the village of Malie.

Aged 70, Muliaga said his main priority is living a healthy life.

He told the Village Voice living a healthy life is simple if you put your whole heart into it.

“To me, health is very important,” said Muliaga.

“I don’t go to the gym or anything. But it’s the simplest things like exercising by doing chores around the house.

“It makes you sweat and it is very useful, trust me.

“I do that every day, and I can tell you that it helps me a lot. I do all the little chores at home and help out with some of the things at home.

“I don’t go a day without exercising by doing the chores at home.”

Said Muliaga, doing chores at home helps him to exercise his muscles and it’s the reason why he enjoys it very much.

Moreover, he said every morning, he starts his day with a prayer before he goes out and exercise by doing his chores.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t get sick easily. This is because I take care of my health and my family first.

“I make sure that I eat healthy food and that I exercise as well. And I encourage my family to do the same.

“I truly believe that if our people start living a healthy life  of exercising and eating healthy food, we will be the most healthiest country on earth.

“Like for me, I don’t do zumba and other types of exercise, but I always get a good exercise and a good sweat from doing the chores at home.”

He also believes that everyone is responsible for their own health.

“Health is very important in any country.

“This has been one of the top priorities for our country for so many years. However, we can see that the efforts by the government and the Ministry of Health are not helping because we have so many non-communicable diseases nowadays, and the rate of obesity and diabetes is very high.

“But to me, we can achieve this if you start with yourself.

“Your health is in your own hands. We don’t have to wait for the Ministry of Health to tell us to live a healthy life.

“We should all start with ourselves. If you can live a healthy life, then the people around you will start living the same lifestyle as well.

“Remember what our elders used to say, if you want to help others, help yourself first. So if you want to live a healthy life, the answer is in your own hands.”
