Know your role and do it

Life is much easier when everyone plays their part.

So says PSA Valavala from Fasitoo-Uta.

Mr. Valavala met up with Village Voice yesterday while he was collecting coconuts for his evening meal.

Mr. Valavala said preparing the evening meal for his family is part of his duties.

“This is what I do almost every day,” he said.

“I don’t work but my role here in our family is to cook, clean and do all the chores around our house, while others are at work.

“This is my way of assisting my family because I don’t want my relatives at home to come back from work and then go prepare food while they are tired, so this is where I have to step up.”

Mr. Valavala shared that the current cost of living is really high.

“The cost of living in Samoa at the moment is very expensive, and that’s why I have to play my part in my family so that my relatives at work won’t get stressed out coming home from work while there’s no food,” he said.

“Family obligations are one thing that causes a lot of issues to the Samoan people’s budget nowadays.

“When there is a funeral, wedding or title bestowment, we have to come as one and support it because this makes family a family, but at the end, this is where most of the money goes.”

Mr. Valavala added that while family obligations continue to demand more money, they cannot be ignored.

“This is our culture we can’t ignore it but have to embrace it and again we just have to play our part and our role because that’s what makes things easier.

Lastly Mr. Valavala said that despite not being able to provide money for his family, he is happy that he is able to cook for his relatives who are working.

“I know there is no money coming from what I am doing but I know for sure my relatives at work are happy about my support for their work.”
