What better way to end the first month of the year than to run off the extra weight gained during the Christmas/new year holidays?
Yesterday, the recently formed Samoa Triathlon Federation (S.T.F) hosted its first 5km race. Sponsored by Digicel, over 120 people joined the early morning run with teams from BSP, Hyundai, Fatu Toa Crossfit, Maxfit gym, Plantation Boxing academy and many individuals taking part.
President of the S.T.F, Nicola Mills, said they were quite impressed by the turn out.
“We held a pre-registration day at Eveni Sports Store yesterday (Friday) and took over 80 registrations alone. The local community has been amazing, I’m absolutely delighted to see so many people, all ranging in different abilities, coming down and taking part.”
The run kicked off at 8am with the under 12s having a two minute head start.
Waves of smiles and Digicel Extraordinary run shirts (printed and donated by Eveni store) filled the Mulinuu area with police escorts nearby.
“The S.T.F, together with Digicel Samoa, have made it one of their objectives for 2016 to promote a more active, healthy and happier lifestyle and hope to encourage hundreds of Samoans, both young and old, to participate,” Ms. Mills said
The C.E.O of Digicel Samoa, Rory Condon, said “Everyone has made the most of the fun atmosphere, cheering and supporting each other. It is this spirit that Digicel Samoa cherishes and is delighted to be a part of.”
Kuniyoshi Watanbe, a J.I.C.A volunteer teacher working at Afega Primary School was the first adult to cross the finish line with a time of 17 minutes and 34 seconds.
