Five different chiefly titles were bestowed at Malie yesterday.

The titleholders are thirty descendants of Temukisa Lalolagi Maualaivao Lafituanai and Nofoatolu Tamasipani of Malie and Lufilufi of the Maualaivao Neru I, the Sa Lafiatuanaī family.

Fa’amausili Leinafo Tuimaleali’ifano said the ceremony was in response to the fact the family is growing and more chiefs are needed. Some of the new titleholders are from overseas.

“Even though most of them are based overseas but they still want to have that strong bond with each other. They want to work together for the betterment of the family.”

Three of the new titleholders are females.

“In our village a female can be bestowed a title however she cannot sit in the saofaiga of the village.”

“They don’t want any female inside the saofaiga because there are some things that they ought to respect when a female is sitting in the village saofaiga.”

“This is the foundation that has always been from the start and they are maintaining it.”

“But a female is entitled to have and use their matai titles but that’s it, they can use their title but when it comes to the saofaiga of the village they are not allowed to sit in there.”

Reverend Savelio Ah Cot, who conducted the service to bless the new titleholders, encouraged the new titleholders.

“When you put God first in every decision you make that’s when love comes around,” he said. “You have been chosen to be the new leaders of your family, you have to serve your family with love and let God be the centre of your family.”

“Today is a new day and a new step of your life so remember you have been chosen to keep your family together.”

“Love them with all of you and lead them to the right path.”

The titles that were bestowed upon the 30 members of the family are: Tuiatafu, Sauni, Auimatagi, Faleono, Fa’auileula
