Re: Australia Day celebrated in Samoa
As a Samoan Australian, I can never “celebrate” a day that in history began the forced and systematic genocide of Aboriginal people and the theft and settlement of their land.
On this day, much can be said of the lack of humility and respect accorded to the first peoples of Australia, given the scenes of blatant entitlement, arrogance and privilege that many white Australians show as part of this day’s usual proceedings.
Australia is very much a fourth world nation, where a first world coexists with an impoverished third world, indigenous nation.
What are we really celebrating?
