CrossFit has taken over the fitness realm in Samoa recently, and the opening of CrossFit Fatu Toa in August of 2015 has attracted many people to come and get fit in a new innovative way.

Brothers Dean and Brandon Sefo share a common passion for Crossfit that began five years ago. From this their passion for CrossFit grew and along with their cousin Xavier Martel, the trio decided to get their Crossfit Certifications to become coaches and assist their friends and family who had also began to grow an interest.

What started off as a humble backyard gym located at the Sefo brothers’ parents home, quickly became the newly-built Crossfit Fatu Toa Gym located in Vaitele’s industrial area.

They began to outgrow their previous space and the need for expansion was evident.

According to CrossFit Fatu Toa Member, Lupe Kapisi, the benefits of CrossFit is that it gives you a broad set of physical skills and fitness that has real world applications. Being prepared for the unknown and unknowable is essentially what CrossFit is about.

CrossFit’s specialty is not specializing and the goal is to develop a fitness that is broad, general and inclusive. As such, workouts incorporate elements of gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting and plyometrics also known as “jump training”.

This training methodology aims to achieve the type of fitness that lends itself to preparing you for real life.

Common fears amongst those hesitant to join, is the misconception that you have to be fit, but the advantage of CrossFit is that it allows you to workout at your own pace as all regimes can be modified to fit your current fitness level.

The coaches are there to assist and motivate members to workout at the best of their abilities while teaching the proper techniques.

Crossfit can be defined as “constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity” which means a different workout everyday with compound movements that the human bodies were designed to perform such as squatting, deadlifting, and running.

These regimes are conducted at a high intensity performance that has been acknowledged to be more effective in achieving desired fitness results.

Crossfit Fatu Toa has made future plans to improve their services, and will soon be offering programmes such as CrossFit Football, CrossFit Gymnastics, and CrossFit Kids.

CrossFit Fatu Toa coaches are currently CrossFit Level 1 Trainers and are certified in CrossFit Gymnastics and Crossfit Football.

Drop ins are welcome at $10 per session and memberships are also available.
