Think a minute…Recently a couple who had been married 72 years died together in the hospital. After a car accident they were put in beds beside each other, so they continually held each other’s hand.
The husband stopped breathing first, yet amazingly his heart kept beating because his wife’s heartbeat continued moving through their hands to his heart. She died exactly one hour later. “The best thing to save for your old age is your marriage.”
Far more real than “love at first sight” is “love at last sight”—so the last time you look in each other’s eyes you are more deeply in love than ever before. But a love like that is built every day as we learn to enjoy all the seasons of love, including the challenging ones. Real life is not always smooth and easy, and neither is real love.
In the third season of love we may think, “Everything would be great if my spouse would change.” The only problem is our spouse is thinking the same thing—so neither one of us admits we are wrong and chooses to change. “Everyone wants to change the world, but no one wants to change himself.”
Then in the fourth season I may think, “That’s just the way it is. She is not going to change, so neither am I.” A wise counselor says, “The most difficult year of marriage is the one you are in.”
Yet with time, and your commitment to grow together, this challenging season will change into a new one. That is the joy and satisfaction of tackling life together.
It takes real men and women to choose to grow stronger and better in their own character and love for each other, no matter what failures or mistakes they have made. “Marriage is our last, best chance to grow up.”
Today you may feel like your marriage is hopeless, or even dead. But it is never too late to start changing. As this well-known song put it: “When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long..and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong…Far beneath the bitter snows, lies the seed that with the sun’s love in the spring becomes the rose.”
Today, God the Son, can begin breathing new life and love into your heart and marriage. Won’t you ask Him to forgive you for your wrong ways of living and loving? He will show what you need to change, and help you in every season of your marriage. Just think a minute…
