A workshop on Conflict Management for the Public Sector was held at the Office of the Public Service Commission (P.S.C.) on June 13, and at the Oloamanu Training Centre from June 14 - 17, 2016. This was to address the Conflict Management gaps identified by P.S.C. as one of the training needs required for the various Government Ministries and Corporations in the public sector.

Twenty-six participants were invited from various Government Corporations for capacity buidling on the concept of Conflict Management.

Three key themes were highlighted:

• Up-skilling the capacity of the public sector managers (as well as other organisations that may be attending) to better manage conflict in the workplace,

• Creating a workplace where everyone wants to be at work and contribute to the performance outputs provided by the Commission and the Ministries and other Organisations,

• Building trust amongst communities and stakeholders that the public sector is providing value for money and is a good place to work.

Peseta Desmond Lee Hang, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the National University of Samoa delivered the thank you speech on behalf of the participants. He acknowledged with appreciation the new knowledge and skills acquired during the one week training, which they will apply in their respective work places.

“The course has achieved its aim by building capacity in managers and other officers to better manage conflict that can and does occur in workplaces and other challenges facing the Public Sector in handling conflicts”.

The Conflict Management for the Public Sector training was conducted by John Ross (Taking Action PTY Ltd, Australia) with Angela Palu-Phineas, Principal Training Development and Consultant Officer as the Co-Trainer.

This training was funded by the Samoa in Country Training Programme (S.I.C.T.P.) under the Oloamanu Centre for Professional Development and Continuing Education (O.C.P.D.C.E.) of the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.).

The Director for the Oloamanu Centre for the Professional Development and Continuing Education, Lynetta Tamnikaiyaroi, in the presentation of Certificates for the Participants confirmed the current recognition of all S.I.C.T.P. courses under Non Formal Learning by the Samoa Qualifications Authority (S.Q.A.).

She also acknowledged the support of the Government of Samoa and the Development Partners (N.Z. M.F.A.T. & D.F.A.T.), through the continuation of this vital Conflict Management Capacity Building initiative for all sectors in Samoa, under the Education Sector Support Programme (E.S.S.P.) 2015 - 2018.
