Say no for your soul

Think a minute…A stressed-out secretary told her boss: “When this rush is over, I’m going to have a nervous breakdown.

I’ve earned it, I deserve it, and nobody’s going to take it from me!” In today’s modern world, a woman often has many jobs and responsibilities.

She is a wife, mother, professional, chef, housekeeper, friend, counselor, teacher, nurse, and the list goes on.

The problem is that each responsibility could take 100 percent of her time and energy. Talk about the “mother load”! If they make a movie about all the demands on a modern mother, they could call it Mission: Impossible.

Since it is truly impossible for a mother to do everything that everybody wants her to do every day, a wise teacher said: “All we must do for a peaceful soul—is use one word called NO.” Once in a while when we are simply too busy, we need to kindly and respectfully “Just Say No” to some requests.

Even Jesus Himself took time out from helping others to rest, relax, and pray. He spent time alone with His Father to recharge His battery with power from God the Father, so he would be able to fully and faithfully manage His life’s pressures and responsibilities. His time alone with His Father also gave Him clear perspective on what was important and what was not.

That way He did not stress out and spend energy on things that were not truly worth it.

If you want to “die in peace” you must first “live in peace”. We can learn to “live in peace” no matter what pressure, problem, and stress we are under.

John Wesley’s mother had a small house full of noisy children where there was no room for her to escape to pray. So to create her own little space of peace, she pulled her apron over her head, and her kids knew to respect her privacy and not interrupt their mother when she was praying under her apron.

You too can escape the noise and pressure of your daily work through talking and listening to God. In fact, Jesus waits all day long for you to take even just a few minutes to let out all of your stress and concerns on Him, so He can fill you with His peace and power. Won’t you take a break before you break down?

Start your daily quiet time with Him by praying and listening to Him speak to you in His Word, the Bible. Just think a minute…
