ProGreen lead efforts to clean up Samoa

To celebrate World Clean Up day in Samoa, ProGreen conducted a Pick-A-Thon Clean Up Activity along the beachfront of Apia.

They started from the S.T.A. Fale, going around the seawall and Government Building Vicinity, and towards the bus stop in Sogi.

“ProGreenies picked up so much rubbish around the government building, sea wall and fish market. It wasn’t a pleasant sight to see, even for a bystander,” a statement posted by the group on Facebook said.

“Most of the rubbish found were single-use plastics varying from plastic bags to wrapping plastics, styrofoam cups, styrofoam plates, aluminium and plastic cans, plastic bottles, cigarette packs and lots more!

“It was expected to find a lot of single use plastics and products around these centralised public places. From the Clean Up and Pick-A-Thon, we feel a lot of work needs to be done to educate and raise awareness to all of Samoa in regards to proper waste management.

“With the plastic ban initiative soon to commence (January 2019), ProGreen Samoa and its supporting partners are excited and can’t wait to support the ban once it’s in place.

“ProGreen Samoa wishes to remind everyone, there are alternatives that we can choose when it comes to deciding what you want to use to package certain items (remember the 4 Rs: Reuse, Reduce, Refuse, Recycle).

“If you do choose to use plastic, be sure its used to its full potential and properly disposed.

“ProGreen wishes to acknowledge and say a big Faafetai to everyone who had pledged and donated for ProGreen Samoa. We added up all our donations from every ProGreenie who joined in today and made over $2000. How awesome is that! These funds will go towards funding ProGreen activities. So stay tuned for more activities coming soon).

“We also acknowledge the support of our partners: Thank you Waste Management Samoa for bringing in the Big Green Truck! You’ve made our work much more easier. Thank you Orlando and Marina Keil for supporting ProGreen. Thank you Mynas Supermarket for donating gloves.

Its always good to be cautious and use safety gloves. Thank you everyone who turned up, Malo lava and Faafetai for your participation and commitment to our activities so far.”
