PR - Have you ever watched rugby and complain about nearly everything when your team is not doing well?
You would probably start complaining about the players, who is not doing what he is supposed to be doing, not taking care of possession, not enough players at ruck times, you would even criticise their game plan and then of course the coach!!
The one person that you would be heavily criticising and who you would also be uttering famished comments about and even questioned his credibility as head coach and why not? Though there may be other factors that could have hindered the team’s performance but the onus of the problem would always fall on the coach.
He’s responsible - he needs to go and you are probably right. Maybe he does not have the right skills and knowledge to be the coach but how can that be improved? What can be done to be successful in coaching?
This was exactly what Samoa Rugby Union (SRU) set out to achieve in its Coaching Development Courses for levels 1 & 2 for our local coaches, held last week from Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th. The main objective of the training was on the up-skilling and further development of our local coaches to international level.
It was a very intensive and interactive program which was met by the same level of enthusiasm and eagerness to learn from the participants. The program tackled many aspects of coaching starting from the basics, making the right selection, how to formulate a solid and a formidable winning game plan and most importantly – was how to become a successful coach.
It also highlighted the commitment of SRU to providing continuous development and up-skilling trainings for our local coaches which also boded well with SRU’s long term goal set out in its strategic plan.
