Weather threatens further delays for Jubilee work

The heavy downpours during the past few weeks have threatened more delays for the multi-million-tala Congregational Christian Church of Samoa Jubilee church at Malua.

One of the sub contractors, Diamond Head and Build at Vaitele are currently working on the roof of the church.

At the construction site yesterday, leading carpenter of Diamond Head, Avaolomua Faiesea said the weather has made it difficult to finish their work on schedule.

“At the moment some of our work is delayed because of the rainy days,” said Avaolomua.

“Our work is the roofing. We had expected to get the roof done within a month and a few weeks but by the looks of things we might be forced to push back our schedule because of the rain.”

The leading carpenter said there are 25 workers from their company on site.

He said once the roof is done everything else should go smoothly under the shelter.

Asked about the Chinese construction company that started the works, Avaolomua said he understands they were only responsible for the foundation of the church.

“The rest is tendered out to other construction companies,” he said.

The project had an initial budget of $7million but works at the church had exceeded that cost.

During the groundbreaking in 2014, Shanghai Construction was awarded the contract for foundation and fill, Fletcher Construction carried out most of the framework, while the exterior was to be installed and maintained by South Pacific Cladding.
