Apia and most of Upolu was the scene of calm and serenity this morning.

But that is slowly changing as the rain begins and winds starting to blow while the nation prepares for the arrival of TD07F, which is responsible for the bad weather we’ve been experiencing for the past few days.

Overnight flights to Fiji were cancelled. Ferry trips between Savai’i and Upolu were cancelled yesterday. Some schools have already sent students home for the day.

According to the latest update from the Samoa Met Office this morning, the country should expect winds to pick up tomorrow morning.

“The TD07F, though still poor organization, has strengthen into a Tropical Depression overnight and its estimated location today at 8:00am Samoa Local Time is 623km WSW of Apia,” the update reads.

“While this system lies within the Wallis and Futuna group, it is moving fast, rain bands (red arrow annotated in the picture) from the circulation will reach Savai’i today and make its way over Upolu.

“The TD07F is expected to intensify slightly as it nears Samoa overnight. Expect the winds to pick up tomorrow morning and more rainfall activity to come.”

The Weather Update: 9th Feb 2018

We are experiencing a decrease in rain and winds activity this morning due to the break in the clouds hovering Samoa forecast zone. The convergence zone has progressed north of Samoa with associated heavy falls and unsettled weather. Overcast conditions over northern Upolu from mid to upper level clouds, isolated showers for the southern districts and highlands.

Thickening cloud bands west of Savai’i is fast approaching and will soon bring more precipitation to the already saturated water catchments and reservoirs. Flash floods risk remains elevated for streams and rivers, and possible floods for low-lying and vulnerable areas.

The TD07F, though still poor organization, has strengthen into a Tropical Depression overnight and its estimated location today at 8:00am Samoa Local Time is 623km WSW of Apia. While this system lies within the Wallis and Futuna group, it is moving fast, rain bands (red arrow annotated in the picture) from the circulation will reach Savai’i today and make its way over Upolu.

The TD07F is expected to intensify slightly as it nears Samoa overnight. Expect the winds to pick up tomorrow morning and more rainfall activity to come.

Please be safe everyone and stay up to date with the latest forecast.
