GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Niroshan Dickwella fought back with a half-century and an 81-run eighth wicket partnership with No. 9 Suranga Lakmal to give Sri Lanka a slender first-innings lead Friday on the third day of the first test.

Sri Lanka was bowled out for 267 in response to New Zealand's 249 to take an 18-run lead. New Zealand reached 18 for one at lunch and quickly leveled the scores.

Jeet Raval was dismissed for four runs, caught by Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne off spinner Dhanajaya de Silva.

Tom Latham was batting on nine with captain Kane Williamson on three.

Sri Lanka resumed day three on 227 for seven with Dickwella and Lakmal on a strong partnership to lift Sri Lanka from a precarious 161 for seven.

The pair added 15 more runs for the day before Lakmal, who had been hit on the elbow two balls earlier by a rising delivery from fast bowler Trent Boult, edged one to the stumps.

He made 40 in 98 deliveries, including two sixes and three boundaries.

The partnership for the eighth wicket came in 173 deliveries.

Dickwella was out for 61 caught by Williamson off spin bowler William Somerville. Dickwella hit three boundaries in his 109-ball innings, his 12 half-century in tests.

Earlier on the second day Kusal Mendis (53) and Angelo Mathews (50) shared seven runs for the third wicket.

Spin bowler Ajaz Patel took five wickets for 89 while Somerville had three for 83.
