The 17-year-old student attending Western Center Academy High School in Hemet, California, was chosen among a pool of applicants who submitted their innovations via Twitter with the #MasergySTEMscholarship hashtag. Horton’s submission on Twitter attracted the judges’ attention with a focus on helping to research a cure for Alzheimer’s patients.

This marks the fourth year of Masergy’s STEM scholarship and the first time the program leveraged social media to expand the opportunities for young innovators to apply.

Horton created a homemade electroencephalograph (EEG) and several other devices to help treat Alzheimer’s Disease based on animal model research by Dr. Li-Huei Tsai at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her EEG was able to measure changes in gamma wave production, and it serves as a proof of concept that may be used for treatments in the future.
