Samoa's rugby teams are off to a winning start at the Pacific Games Sevens tournament.

Both the Manu Samoa Sevens and Manusina started their Pacific Games campaign with wins at Marist Stadium, Lotopa this morning.

Tila Mealoi led Samoa to a 19-0 win over American Samoa in their first game of the day. 

The men in blue started out conservatively, testing American Samoa’s defense who were equal to the task.

But Laaloi Leilua sliced through to score Samoa’s first points, 5-0.

Tomasi Alosio added to Samoa’s lead when he scored their second try moments after. Mealoi added the conversion for a 12-0 lead at the halftime break.

The second half presented many scoring opportunities for the Manu Samoa but handling errors and poor finishing let them down.

American Samoa was also equal to the task, although they spent most of the time defending.

The only points for the second half came from Leilua’s second try, when he scored after following up on a chip kick.

Mealoi successfully converted for the final score, 19-0.

The Manu Samoa Sevens have two remaining games today. Their next match is against the Solomon Islands at 1pm followed by Tonga at 4.50pm.

Samoa is in pool B with Tonga, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and American Samoa.

Pool A consists of reigning champions Fiji, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Nauru and Wallis and Futuna.

The Manusina team also claimed their first victory against New Caledonia this morning. Apaau Mailau scored a double on debut with Elisapeta Ieti contributing a try.

Their next games are against American Samoa and Australia.
