Germany’s head coaches Kobus Potgieter and Coach Pablo Lemoine have expressed disappointment with their loss to Manu Samoa.

The team was given a 66-15 hiding by the Samoan national team in a World Cup qualifier match at Apia Park. 

Speaking to the media in a post-match press conference, Lemoine said there was a need for the team to do better on the field.  

“There are areas that we played fine in the game but the worst of is the attitude of the players towards the game. If we don’t play the game we were taught to play to qualify in the World Cup and specially to show respect to a big nation of rugby such as Samoa. As the coach I don’t agree with what happened on the field,” he said. 

Potgieter said Germany’s players did not execute the game plan when they took on Manu Samoa.  

“We didn’t showcase our plans and we didn’t execute what we were capable of and that was what it was during most of the game. In the second half, once or twice we were back into doing what we wanted to do, depending on the pressure. But we couldn’t do it for 60 minutes, it was just 10 minutes.”

Poor execution played a big part in their defeat according to Potgieter and the team gave away ‘few soft tries’ to their opponents. 

“Our execution was very poor and that let us down; we gave away a few soft tries today and taking nothing away from Samoa. They did very well today and we just didn’t execute what we were supposed to do,” he added. 

The team will now have to regroup and prepare for the second match in a fortnight in Germany with Lemoine indicating that there will be changes. 

“We have to respect the national team and some guys did not show respect to the jersey and we have to change some players and maybe work more on our strategy.” 

Potgieter expressed similar sentiments and added that yesterday’s game will be analysed before changes are made to the side that will take on Manu Samoa in the return match. 

“Like Pablo said if its personnel changes we need, we will make it but we need a few days and go through the game and make sure we make the right decisions and hopefully in two weeks we can play a better game.”
