New Zealand-born and former Australian Kangaroos star, Josh Papali’i, is delighted with his selection for the Toa Samoa 2017 Rugby League World Cup squad.

He, along with several others, will make his international debut for Samoa in the upcoming Rugby League World Cup after being selected in the team’s 24-man squad last week.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer at Faleolo Airport yesterday morning, he said it was “about time” for him to play for Samoa.

“I am honoured to be part of the squad and I think it’s time to be back to represent my country.”

“I am also happy to be back here in the islands meeting all the people and to ready ourselves for the upcoming World Cup.”

Papali’i, in just 18 months after representing Australia in a midyear test, will boost a Samoan line-up which also features Canberra teammates, Joey Leilua and Junior Paulo.

Papalii has a wealth of experience at the top level according to the Australia N.R.L. news, having played for Canberra Riders for six consecutive seasons and also for Queensland Maroons in the State of Origin.

Papali’i also spoke of his excitement and what it means to him to finally be in the Toa Samoa squad.

“It means a lot because I wanted to play for Samoa back then. Now I’ve got the chance and it means everything for me as a Samoan.”
