Samoa International Cricket Association hosted a two-day international cricket competition for the Lefaga and Safata Under-15 girls.

The competition was held at Tuana’imato earlier this week.

Eleven primary schools competed in the tournament including Mulivai, Tafitoala, Fusi, Lotofaga, Sataoa, Salamumu, and Sa’anapu from the Safata district, with Matautu, Savaia, Safa’ato’a and Falease’ela from the Lefaga district.

According to Tournament Director, Tiafala Alatasi, the main focus of the tournament is to develop the sport through the grassroots level, as well as identify promising young talents in Samoa.

He added not all students are good inside the classroom but some are born athletes.

“Another part of our direct objective through our programme is to familiarise the students on the sport and to gain their interest so they can pursue this sport in the future,” Tiafala said.

“Samoa International Cricket believes the only best way to develop the sport in Samoa is through the grassroots level where they can learn the game from young age.”

Alatasi stated few regions have concluded their competitions.

“The Vaimauga and Aana regions are done with their competition. This is the initiative from the Samoa International Cricket for all regions in Samoa to have this sort of competition through the grassroots level.”

“The only challenge that we face is that we don’t have enough teachers within schools to teach the sport to students.”

“And that is why we are looking at the moment to try and train the teachers on the sport during our outreach programmes throughout the schools.”

The finals for the Lefaga and Safata Under-15 girls international cricket competition, that was scheduled for yesterday, is now postponed because of heavy rains, until further notice.
