Heading back to school after dropping out is a big decision to make.

Steve Ah Siu had felt he had come to the end of his school life and quit to stay home and then look for a job.

“My parents struggled so much to pay my school fees,” he said. “As we all know, University school fees are very expensive. Also my daily bus fares and lunch were added on as well.”

“I also have other three sisters currently in schools who also needed money for lunch, bus fares and other requirements for school. For those reasons, I felt I needed to drop out of school and go look for a job to help out with my family.”

“My father Avito Ah Siu has worked so hard to put all of us, his nine children into school. He has never failed to do so.”

“I believe it was then up to us, his children, to work hard and study well in order to be able to make a better life.”

“My mother Lili Avito pleaded with me not to drop out of the University because they would support me in my studies in any way they could.”

Mr. Ah Siu said: “So I took on board their reasons in my mind and heart went back to school, and studied hard, aiming to graduate from the Institute of Technology at the National University of Samoa”.

“I am so happy I have made it. I have now graduated with a Certificate II in Construction and Joinery”.

“This is for my parents for their endless support given to me.”

Lili Avito, his mother said: “I want to thank my son for never giving up. We all have struggles in life but he has proved to us that he listens to us and he is a better person now”.

“He is the first of our children to finish and graduate from the University.”

And while Steve Ah Siu may not have been top in his class but he is top in the eyes of his parents.

“I did internship with the S.M.I. Company and I am hoping that now I have  graduated, I will be able to be employed by them,” he said.

“I can’t wait to get a job and help out as it is only my father who is the sole provider for my family.”
