The role of youths vital

Youth play an important role in their families.

At the age of 22, Kitiona Emosi, from the village of Samea in Mulifanua, shares his perspective of being a young man.

The Village Voice team approached him while he was working on the plantation yesterday morning.

Mr. Emosi believes parents need support from their children to help address financial obstacles.

“A few youths around our village are making good use of their time, trying to find jobs and some work to support their families,” he said.

“I believe our parents can’t work alone to support the whole family these days and they really need our help.”

“I also believe that some parents are old and they need their children to support their family, even if it means working the plantation.”

Mr. Emosi said apart from his plantation, he also earns money through his work.

“I work at the Faleolo International Airport right now, but I won’t start until the afternoon (yesterday), so that is why I am here at the plantation.”

“Life is really hard nowadays in Samoa with the cost of living we have seen so far, but to me, we can’t do anything about it but work.”

“There are three of us in our house who work at the moment to support our family.”

Mr. Emosi says time is something very important.

“We have to make use of time, time does not wait for anyone and it ticks all the time.”

“Time is ticking fast and our parents are looking to us to support them.”

“They supported us from when we were young, and now they are expecting us to work because that is the reason they took us to school at the first place.”

Mr. Emosi said families in Samoa wouldn’t be struggling if youths played their role in their respective families.

“Like I said before, life is not that easy anymore, our country is moving forward and goods and services are expensive.”

“The only thing that will help our family cope with the struggles is us the youths, working to support them.”
